This is a treat! A nearly new Martin D-41 Dreadnought from 2017, nicely decorated but not overdressed, just the slightest hint of wear and a clean crisp full tone.
The D-41 is based on the classic, proven square-shouldered Martin Dreadnought design, and carries the ’41’ grade appointments- abalone for the purfling around the soundhole and top but not the fingerboard tag, C. F. Martin logo and hexagonal position markers. The top is Sitka Spruce, paired with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, Mahogany for theneck and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard.
The top features forward shifted bracing, and the headstock sports the new Schaller GrandTune 18:1 open gear tuners. These look like Waverley or Grover Sta-Tite models but use new technologies for smooth, accurate tuning. This is the first I’ve seen them on a Martin. The Martin page for the D-41 lists tuners as ‘Enclosed’, and those have a different mounting screw pattern, so these were perhaps a special order or offering.
Looking closely at this guitar and comparing it to much earlier examples of similar models, it’s likely that the introduction of advanced production equipment is visible. In particular, there are virtually no gaps around the inlays; it’s been prepared with precision programmable cutters. Otherwise you only see work this clean from very highly skilled folks like William Laskin, Mark Kett or Linda Manzer.
This fine instrument is sold with its original Geib hard shell case.
