The Martin D-35 Dreadnought appeared in 1965 but made its catalog debut in 1966, and was a practical response to increasing demand for square-shouldered dreadnoughts. Demand was so high for that specific body design that Gibson altered several round-shouldered models, including the iconic J-45 to the square-shouldered design.
As the 1960’s progressed, demand for Martin Dreadnought guitars was increasing but there was a shortage of Rosewood large enough for a two-piece back. At the time, ‘Rosewood’ often really meant ‘Brazilian Rosewood’ and this was the case until 1969 when Martin officially ceased use of that wood. However, small pieces found their way onto guitars until as late as 1972 or 1973, usually into the center section. From 1970, D-35 models used Indian Rosewood. For the rest of the guitar, Sitka Spruce is on the top, Mahogany is used for the body blocks and neck, and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. Here, the tuners are Grover Roto-Matics.
Dating to April of 2013, this Martin D-35 dreadnought is in very good condition with only light play wear. There is a small amount of clouding on the back at the waist, but otherwise the guitar is very clean. The back-wood selection on this guitar is one of the better pairings I’ve seen, with the lighter-coloured center section nicely contrasting with the outer secitons. This guitar is in fully stock, original condition.
This Martin D-35 is supplied with its original molded hard shell case.
