The Martin D-35 Dreadnought first appeared in 1965, partly as a way to use the remaining stock of Brazilian Rosewood sections that were too small for a two-piece back.
Drawing from the very successful D bodied Dreadnought, the Martin D-35 was placed between the venerable D-28 and more expensively decorated D-41 and D-45 models. The primary and most visible differences are the three-piece back and bound Ebony fingerboard. The top is Sitka Spruce while the sides back and head plate are Indian Rosewood. Body blocks, linings, and the neck are Mahogany, and the bridge and bound fingerboard are Ebony. Tuners are Grover Roto-Matics and there are no installed electronics.
This Martin D-35 example dates to June of 1971 and was built at Martin’s Nazareth plant. It is in overall good condition. As is common on Martins built prior to 1984, it has a small crack in the top between the bridge and pickguard, caused by the pickguard shrinking after being glued directly to the top, and finished over.
The original pickguard has been removed and replaced with a slightly oversize model that covers part of the top crack. The finish is in good condition and the top has developed a lovely amber tint with some natural and expected lacquer checking.
This Martin D-35 plays well, and has the full, rich Martin sound with plenty of bottom end. The action is good, with lots of saddle height for future adjustments.
The original blue molded Martin hard shell case is included.
Here’s the builder on the Martin D-35:
“A distinctive three-piece back and antique white binding around the fingerboard set it apart. Expressive quarter-inch straight bracing gives it balance and power for any situation. Premium East Indian rosewood, Sitka spruce, and a timeless Dreadnought shape have made it the choice for pickers, strummers, and players from Johnny Cash to Seth Avett.”
