The very first C. F. Martin 00018 steel string guitar appeared in 1906 with a Maple body, then with Rosewood until 1917, and finally built using Mahogany for the body in small numbers until 1926, when 224 were sold. Annual production stayed in the mid-hundreds until 1972, when 650 were built. It has been in production since, with the exception of 1932 and 1933, when none were built.
The C. F. Martin 00018 string guitar is closely related to the OM or Orchestra Model, introduced in 1930. They key difference is scale length; the 000 has a 24.9 inch scale length, and the OM a 25.4 inch scale. At that time and like most other guitars, the 000-18 used a 12-fret neck. The OM design began as a modification of the 000 for a prominent banjo player (Perry Bechtel) who, like many others, was migrating to guitar from banjo. The 14-fret neck required some subtle modifications to the 000 body so the bridge would line up correctly.
The Martin 00018 has been a prime choice for fingerstyle players for a very long time. The shorter scale makes complex chord voicings easier to reach, and the relatively small body size produces plenty of volume, a well balanced tone, and is very comfortable.
Here we’re looking at a Martin 00018 dating to March of 2017, and built in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It’s in very good clean condition, with just light fingermarks on the pickguard as the most noticeable wear. Fretwear is light, the guitar has been well set up, and a set of K&K Mini pickups have been installed to an endpin jack. This is a great sounding, great playing guitar.
