This is a beautiful Martin 000-42 Standard Series, a spectacular sounding instrument with just the right amount of inlay.
The 000 body size was introduced in 1902 with a 12-fret, 24.9 inch scale length neck and in 1934 gained the ‘new’ 14-fret neck. The OM or Orchestra Model is based on this guitar, but with a 14-fret, 25.4 inch scale length neck.
The ’42’ in the name refers to the Style 42 materials and inlay set, introduced in 1858, and discontinued in 1943. It started to re-appear, first as the D-42, in 1986. Style 42 indicates a Spruce top, paired with Rosewood for the sides, back and head plate, with a ‘zipper’ back strip. It also includes Ebony for the bridge and fingerboard. The inlay set includes an Abalone strip around the top, fingerboard tag and soundhole, a ‘Style 45’ snowflake fingerboard inlay set and Abalone C F Martin peghead inlay.
The modern, Standard Series Martin 000-42 as stock is a purely acoustic guitar, but is available with optional electronics.
This a very comfortable guitar to play, and it has a wonderfully rich sound with plenty of high end sparkle, sufficient bottom end, and even representation throughout the harmonic range. Martin now runs these through PLEK machines, so the action is as clean as it can get.
The original Martin branded hard shell case is included.
Here is the builder on the Martin 000-42 Standard Series:
“The ornate design and flash of the 42 Series adds panache to the classic tone of East Indian rosewood back and sides, a Sitka spruce scalloped X-braced top, and hand-fit dovetail neck joint. Open geared tuners, antique white binding, polished gloss finish and abalone pearl top inlay offers exquisite style with complex tone. Short scale and a sleek modified low-oval neck with narrow taper mean strumming and picking for hours in comfort and bliss. “
