Here is another rarity, a Martin 000-40SPR Peter Rowan “Midnight Moonlight” Signature Edition, built during 2001 as number 26 of 87.
Peter Rowan has had a long musical career, playing, singing and writing songs with Bill Monroe, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Clarence White, Tony Rice and many other artists.
The Martin 000-40SPR Peter Rowan “Midnight Moonlight” Signature Edition features a Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides, Mahogany for the body blocks and neck, with Ebony for the pyramid bridge, headstock overlay and bound fingerboard. The “Midnight Moonlight” inlay set uses Abalone and Mother of Pearl, with a distinctive moon-theme headstock inlay, moon phase position markers, inlaid Peter Rowan signature at the last fret, and an Abalone rosette ring. The neck uses a slotted-peghead design, which provides more downbearing at the nut without angling the head back further.
This example has a single label, identifying it as the Peter Rowan “Midnight Moonlight” signature edition, is signed by Peter Rowan and C. F. Martin IV, and marked as number 26 of 87.
The Martin 000-40 first appeared in 1909 – the 000 itself in 1902 – and was built until 1917. Reappearing in 1928, it then stayed into production until 1941. It has been re-issued a number of times primarily as artist signature models, including one for Mark Knopfler.
This Martin 000-40SPR is in very good, clean condition with only the lightest wear. A strap pin was installed to the heel, but has been removed. The original hard shell case is included.
