The Martin 00-28 model has been in production, though not continuously, since 1898 and is a mid-sized guitar, between the 0 and 000 or OM body sizes. The ’00’ indicates the body size, while the ’28’ indicates the materials trim and decoration level. Like other ’28’ models, it pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and head plate, Mahogany for the body blocks and neck, and Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The neck is designed to have 14 frets to the body, with a 24.9 inch or 632.5mm scale length and 1.75 inch or 44.5mm nut width.
Current Martin 00-28 models like this example again sport Herringbone purfling around the top. This harkens back to the original run, from 1898 to 1941. Martin had been sourcing their Herringbone purfling from a German supplier, and when Martin ran out, they could not resupply. Also, until 1941 and for the one example built in 1958, Brazilian Rosewood was used. By the time production of this model resumed, Brazilian had been completely phased out.
Smaller body guitars like the Martin 00-28 tend to be not quite as loud as their larger cousins the Dreadnoughts, but offer a more balanced tone with rich, brilliant trebles and well represented bass and mids. The body can be more comfortable than jumbo or dreadnought models, particularly for physically smaller players. These characteristics make them very popular with fingerstyle players.
