The small body, slotted peghead, 12-fret neck Martin 0-16NY was effectively Martin’s first ‘Vintage Reissue’ when it appeared in 1961. It was introduced during the ‘Folk Boom’ in recognition of interest in and scarcity of early Martin guitars. This model attempts to reproduce a pre-1929 guitar, and was originally configured for nylon or light gauge steel strings, with ‘Folk’ (ball end nylon or rope core) strings recommended. The slotted peghead improves downbearing on the nut without having to tip the head back further, improving neck strength. This model was built during three periods, from 1961 to 1977, 1979 to 1992, and during 1994.
The ‘NY’ part of the name refers to Martin’s original shop in New York, active from 1834 to 1839 when production moved to Nazareth, PA. However, the labels didn’t reflect this move until 1898, 59 years later!
Here we’re looking at a very nice Martin 0-16NY built during 1974 in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. As a ’16’ model, it features a Sitka Spruce top paired with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. The fingerboard, head plate, bridge plate, and bridge are Indian Rosewood. The 19-fret neck joins the body at the 12th fret and has a pronounced soft V profile and is fairly wide, approaching classical neck widths. It has a fixed metal stiffening rod; Martin did not introduce adjustable truss rods until 1985. The tuners are simple, open gear strip models with creme plastic buttons.
This Martin 0-16NY example is in good clean and apparently original condition with no cracks or breaks. It plays well, and sounds good, delivering a surprising amount of volume from the small box.
