This afternoon we’re looking at a Luke Mercier Flushfret 5-string fretless nylon string banjo, drawing on influences from Edwin Cubley and Fairbanks banjos of the 1880s.
Luke Mercier has his workshop about 200km east of Toronto, where he builds, pairs and restores instruments including violins, violas, cellos, and banjos. He has restored violins for about 20 years, beginning with an apprenticeship at the Geo. Heinl company in Toronto. At the time this banjo – number 36 – was built, Mercier was still in Toronto.
This interesting banjo uses a 10.625 inch wide, 2.25 inch deep rim of Maple and Mahogany. The neck is Mahogany with an Ebony fingerboard, Brazilian Rosewood headplage and staggered Ivory position markers. The tailpiece is handmade of bone, by Mercier. The tension band is brass, naturally oxidized and reddish brown and there are sixteen brackets using Fairbanks reproduction hardware. At the octave, there is a nice marquetry marker.
The tuners are traditional friction fit rosewood pegs.
A case is not included but can be supplied.
