The Twelfth Fret ~ Since 1977 ~

The Ludwig Ambassador tenor banjo is an example of a business recognizing opportunity. The Ludwig Drum Company started in 1909 and by the early 1920’s realized that banjos are closely related to drums, and offered a range of models. However, by the early 1930’s as banjos started to wane, Ludwig moved back to its core business – and is still a respected name in drum manufacturing.

Ludwig banjos were built in Chicago, Illinois.   They started to appear in 1921 and about 15 models were soon available, many in both tenor and plectrum versions.  Much of the production was commercial quality rather than professional grade, and so higher end examples like this Ludwig Ambassador tenor banjo are fairly uncommon.

The Ludwig Ambassador seen here dates to about 1926 and appears to be in largely original condition, and plays well.   It was clearly a higher end model, as the engraved metal hardware is gold plated.  The basic construction of the pot, neck and resonator are Walnut, with an Ebony fingerboard.  The lovely inlay set, fairly elaborate as was often the case at the time, is engraved Mother of Pearl.    It has expected wear, and for some reason the very last fret was removed.    A modern Remo head has been installed.

The original case is included.  This case has been re-covered with black tape and the handle has been replaced, but the interior is complete and includes the Ludwig Banjos Made in Chicago badge.
