Here’s a lovely Lowden F25c with Cedar and Indian Rosewood built during 2002 at the now-closed Lowden Guitars work shop in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. The F25c is part of Lowden’s Original Series.
Lowden Guitars began in 1974 with George Lowden reaching the decision to build professionally. Opening a shop in Groomsport, County Down, Northern Ireland. Orders grew and in 1980 his Swiss distributors sparked a five-year contract to have Lowden guitars built under license by dedicated workers at S. Yairi in Japan as a way of making these models more available. At the end of this contract, Lowden chose to bring all production to Bangor, County Down. In 1988, financial pressures forced the company into receivership. The company was purchased by a local group and renamed the Lowden Guitar Company, with George retaining ownership of the designs and trademarks and providing quality control. This new company moved to a plant in Newtownards. In 2003, that arrangement ended, and the following year new workshops were established in Downpatrick.
This Lowden F25c dates to 2002 – based on the label type and serial number – is in overall good shape, with minimal wear. This fine guitar uses Lowden’s medium size F body, and the ’25’ pairs a Cedar top with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, bridge and headplate. Mahogany is used for the body binding and the five piece neck along with Rosewood. The fingerboard is Ebony. The rosette has a ring of Abalone. A Fishman Prefix Pro system was factory installed and is in place.
Wear is minor, with light fret wear in the lower positions. The finish is in good shape, and there is a thin clear plastic pickguard.
The original hard shell case, an excellent Lowden-branded Hiscox molded flight case, is included.
More From The Builder On The Lowden F25c:
“The Original Series was the very first Lowden range from 1976, just as the ‘O’ model is George’s original Lowden body design. Although the medium sized ‘F’ and concert sized ‘S’ have been added to the range since then, the Lowden standard of passionate commitment to no compromise was well and truly set.
The 25 was often thought of as THE Lowden. Nowadays with many more new models it is not possible to say which would be THE Lowden, but the 25 has character in bags. It is rich, full-bodied, warm and powerful. In the O version it has complexity as well, in the F it is very loud and more focused. Both are great for percussive strumming, flat picking and fingerpicking.”
