This 2016 Lounsbury Concert Cutaway comes from Chris Lounsbury’s workshop in Hamilton, Ontario and features Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood construction, and has a soundport on the bass side.
Chris Lounsbury has been building professionally for about twelve years, taking training from the well regarded courses run by Sergei de Jonge in Chelsea, Quebec. His work is clean and well thought out.
This Lounsbury Concert Cutaway is a well-built, good sounding instrument with a well-developed voice. The Concert body is a bit larger than a standard OM (Orchestra Model). The top is Sitka Spruce, the sides, back and head plate are Indian Rosewood, the body blocks and neck Mahogany, with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The head plate has an inlaid white border. The tuners are excellent Gotoh 510 models with black buttons, and an L R Baggs Lyric pickup system is installed to an end-pin jack, with controls tucked under the bass edge of the soundhole. The inside of the top is signed and dated to February 2016.
The finish is French Polish, which allows instrument to vibrate freely while still providing some protection to the surfaces. Many builders influenced by de Jonge use this method partly because of its tonal superiority. Also, it is hand-applied and so does not require special facilities for spraying toxic and explosive finish materials.
The original hard shell case is included.
