Here is a rare thing of beauty – a Linda Manzer Custom Cutaway from 1980, wearing a lovely Alphonse Mucha – inspired engraved headstock inlay.
Linda Manzer has been building since the mid 1970’s, training with Jean Larrivee from 1974 to 1978 and in 1984 learning archtop construction from the late James D’Acquisto in New York City. Her spectacular and varied instruments have been used by many top players including Pat Metheney, Bruce Cockburn, and Julian Lage.
This Linda Manzer Custom Cutaway makes clear references to the Larrivee style, with a classical-guitar influenced cutaway body with Sitka Spruce top and bracing and an Abalone rosette, Indian Rosewood back, sides and head plate, Mahogany for the body blocks and neck, and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The wonderful Mucha-inspired engraved headstock inlay uses a variety of shell and other materials, and is of a style also used by Wendy Larrivee and William ‘Grit’ Laskin.
This example of Linda Manzer’s work was built in Toronto during 1980, and is in overall very good condition with light play and finish wear expected of a (presently) 42-year old instrument that’s been used as intended. Fret wear is light, and the guitar plays very well and has a strong, well developed voice with plenty of projection.
The original arched top hard shell case is included.
