Here we have a rarity – a very early Les Godfrey Dragonetti bass, built during 2002 at Godfrey’s shop in Toronto, Canada. This bass, serial number 003, is in overall good condition and shows signs of having been used as intended. The design shows the influence of Carl Thompson, with whom Godfrey worked for a time.
The Godfrey Dragonetti bass body uses a carved Maple cap on a Mahogany back, and pairs an Ebony adjustable bridge with a brass plate tailpiece. The neck is Mahogany with an unbound Rosewood fingerboard and Gotoh tuners, and the electronics are based on a Kent Armstrong pickup, and runs through a single volume control with a turned wooden knob. The finish is very light, likely a few coats of a mahogany-tinted lacquer with no filler.
The body shape seems to be based on a somewhat stretched violin shape, and the extended upper horn has a practical purpose, shifting the balance point away from the neck, when the bass is used with a strap.
Certainly distinctive and eye-catching, this Godfrey Dragonetti bass plays well, and its tone is rich, deep and full.
