This William Laskin Short Scale Classical guitar, built during 2020 in Toronto, pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Wenge for the sides and back. In terms of being short scale – the scale length used here is 640mm or 25.19 inches. ‘Standard’ full concert scale length is 650mm, or 25.59 inches. The 10mm does make a noticeable difference in how easy it is to reach for low position fingerings!
Aside from extremely high levels of general skill, one of the things William Laskin is known for is his work with engraved inlay, and many of his instruments feature examples, from the simple to the wildly complex. William Laskin’s website shows an increasing number of examples of his work and is well worth spending time at.
Here, the original purchaser chose to have a Redtail Hawk inlay placed at the third fret of the Laskin Short Scale Classical. This inlay is executed in a variety of materials, including abalone mother of pearl, and a red stone; the engraving helps provide the detail of the hawk’s feathers. It is a beautiful and carefully crafted image.
Built in Toronto during 2020, this Laskin Short Scale Classical is in overall good condition with minor wear, but it has had a couple of back-crack repairs done by Beghrad Gorgani in Toronto. The work is solid and the cracks now seem secure and stable. This guitar has been used as intended, so it also has a number of small dents from normal wear. It plays well, and is in the process of opening its voice.
This Laskin Short Scale Classical Guitar is sold with its original Hoffee carbon fiber case.
