The Larrivee OM-40 Walnut, built on Larrivee’s OM pattern, is part of the Legacy series that reflects traditional design aesthetics. As an OM, it delivers a full well balanced tone with great representation throughout the harmonic range. Walnut delivers brightness with a warm mid-range tone, between Mahogany and Rosewood.
The OM or Orchestra Model was introduced in the very late 1920’s as banjo players including noted bandleader Perry Bechtel moved to guitar, and wanted better access to higher frets. The OM design is based on the Martin OOO or ‘Triple O’ body design, but added a longer scale length neck – 25.4 inches (625mm) instead of the Triple O’s 24.9 inches. This increases the string tension, making the top work a bit harder to deliver a bit more volume and clarity. The upper bouts are a bit wider, too.
This Larrivee OM-40 Walnut dates to August 18, 2015 and was built at the ‘new’ shop in Oxnard, California. Sharing the same general design as the Mahogany and Rosewood versions, the OM-40 Walnut pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Black Walnut for the sides and back, all Spruce braced. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany, with Ebony for the head plate, fingerboard and bridge. The top, back and fingerboard have Maple binding. The position markers are Mother of Pearl diamonds, and the tuners are a vintage style open back model with etched metal buttons and 18:1 ratio. The pickguard is a faux-tortoise teardrop shape, also vintage-style. The finish is a light gloss coat on the top, satin everywhere else. There are no installed electronics.
This guitar is in very good clean condition with only light wear. It plays well, and has a warm, full sound. The OM design is fairly compact compared to the Dreadnought body, and so can be quite a bit more comfortable for seated fingerstyle.
The original hard shell case is included and contains the special truss-rod adjustment tool.
