This Larrivee Long Scale Classical guitar is in natural finish and built while Jean Larrivee’s shop was still in Toronto; his helpers at this point included William ‘Grit’ Laskin, David Wren, Linda Manzer and George Gray. The Larrivee shops have been training grounds for many now-prominent builders.
At the time this Larrivee Long Scale Classical was built, Larrivee was working frequently with Edgar Monch, a highly respected builder born in Germany in 1907, who was living in Toronto at the time – he returned to Germany not long before his death in 1977. Monch’s influence on Larrivee is still evident, as Larrivee steel strings still show strong Classical guitar characteristics that contribute to a full, rich and evenly balanced tone.
This Larrivee Long Scale Classical features a Sitka Spruce top paired with Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, bridge and head plate. The body blocks and neck are Honduran Mahogany, with Ebony used for the fingerboard.
This is a Long-Scale guitar, meaning that at 662mm (26.06 inches), its scale length exceeds the ‘standard’ 650mm (25.59 inch) used on most classical guitars. Long Scale is often accompanied by a wider nut width – the standard
being 50mm to 52mm – and here the nut width is 53.3mm (2.1 inches).
Overall this example is in good condition with a few small dents and dings. The saddle is fairly low, providing a very usable action height. At the time, Larrivee was also friends with the late Eli Kassner, a well known and respected Toronto classical guitar teacher. Kassner often advocated the use of fairly high action, which aids in the generation of a clean tone and higher volumes.
A Japanese-made hard shell case is included with this Larrivee long scale classical guitar.
