Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
The Larrivee L 02 Mahogany is now discontinued, but was Larrivee’s entry point for those wanting high quality steel string acoustic guitars. The L-02 was a slope shoulder dreadnought design.
Here we’re looking at a Larrivee L 02, dating to May 12 2010 at Larrivee’s workshop in Victoria, BC, three years before all Larrivee manufacturing moved to Oxnard, California.
This guitar is in very good condition, with a Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany for the back, sides, neck, and body blocks. The fingerboard and bridge are Ebony, and the head plate is Indian Rosewood. An L R Baggs Anthem pickup system was factory installed, with the controls accessed under the bass side of the soundhole.
This Larrivee L 02 plays very well and has only the slightest wear to the finish, and light to moderate fret wear mostly to the sixth fret on the treble strings. It’s got a full sound, warm and rich yet with top-end sparkle, somewhat like one of the other major slope-shoulder designs like the venerable J-45. The feel is fully Larrivee, though, with the classically influenced, slightly wider and flatter fingerboard.
The original Larrivee hard shell case is included.
Jean Larrivee has been one of the most influential Canadian guitar builders. Developing an interest in building in the late 1960’s, Larrivee worked with Edgar Monch during his residence in Toronto – which accounts for the clear classical influence in his designs. Many now-prominent Canadian builders learned in the Larrivee shops, including David Wren, Grit Laskin, Linda Manzer, G W Barry and Tony Duggan-Smith.
