Built in Victoria BC during the spring of 1982, this Larrivee C-10 – also known as an L-28 – sports a very nice vintage Seahorse headstock inlay by Wendy Larrivee.
The Larrivee C-10 is still in production, though not as elaborate as this vintage example. Its base is a pointed Florentine cutaway L-body with a Sitka Spruce top and Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and head plate. The neck is Mahogany with Ebony used for the bound fingerboard and bridge. The headstock features the elaborate, engraved seahorse inlay of Mother of Pearl and Abalone, and a winged-torch inlay set is used on the fingerboard. The body top has an Abalone purfling layer and the bridge wings are also inlaid.
This example is in overall good condition, and has been used as intended. The top finish has an amount of natural, expected lacquer checking but fret wear is minimal. This guitar plays well, and has a well-developed voice.
The original black hard shell case is included with this Larrivee C-10.
Jean Larrivee began building guitars in Toronto in 1967 and worked there until 1977, and many of Canada’s top luthiers learned there, including William ‘Grit’ Laskin, Linda Manzer, and David Wren. In 1977, the shop and many of the employees moved to Victoria BC, and stayed there until the 1982, when it moved again in 1983 to North Vancouver. The company kept growing, however, and by 1993 outgrew the North Van space and had to expand into a new Vancouver shop, where they stayed until 2013. In 2001, a new shop opened, this time in the United Staes, specifically Oxnard, California. But, by 2013 it was no longer viable to maintain multiple locations and the Vancouver shop closed. Since 2013, all Larrivee models have been built in Oxnard.
