Built in Scarborough – the eastern part of Toronto – around 1991, this Lado Supra 1 shows off the quality of Joseph Kovacic’s work in building Superstrat style guitars.
Joseph Kovacic has been building guitars since 1973 and for a time was the largest volume electric guitar builder in Canada. From 1973 to 1976, his shop was at 920 Kingston Road in Toronto’s east end until demand outgrew capacity. That Kingston Road address was next the original location of the Twelfth Fret, and Joe would visit us whenever he was in the area.
Here we’re looking at a Lado Supra 1, a single pickup version of the Supra. It features Lado’s typican neck through design with elegantly sculptured heel. There’s no restriction on access to the upper frets on these. The body and neck are built of Maple with Walnut sections, and the neck has a finished Maple fingerboard. Hardware includes Schaller mini sealed tuners and a Made in USA Kahler trem bridge with a flip-top lock at the headstock. Electronics include a single humbucking pickup with a coil split switch, and Volume and Tone.
The Lado Supra 1 is a straight ahead rock guitar, and this example has perhaps the lowest action I’ve seen in some time. It is in good condition, with light to moderate fret wear. One of the things about low action is that it doesn’t require much force, so fret wear tends to be lighter over time.
A rectangular hard shell case is included.
