Here’s a treat – a Kubicki Factor Fretless bass in metallic teal with Drop D tuner, built in the Fender Custom Shop during October 1990. This example is factor-stock as fretless.
Philip Kubicki started off working for Fender, and set out on his own to explore his own ideas of what a bass could be. The Kubicki Factor Bass first appeared as a limited production item in 1983. Once one of the first built was used by John Taylor of Duran Duran during a Saturday Night Live appearance, demand rose sharply. These basses were built in Santa Barbara, California.
By the late 1980’s, demand was so high that Kubicki entered into a licensing contract with Fender and from 1989 to 1991 the Factor bass was built at the Fender Custom Shop in Corona, California. Once the contract expired, hand-building resumed. Philip Kubicki died in 2013 in New Hampshire.
The Kubicki Factor Fretless bass body is maple, with a distinctive offset waist design and tuners at the tail. The neck is a headless design with an integrated Drop D tuner lever, and is made from laminated maple for stability and strength. The truss rod adjuster is at the very end of the headstock.
The proprietary bridge with integrated tuners works very well, and tuning is smooth and accurate. Balance is exceptionally good.
The original Fender designed hard shell case is included.
