Kohno classical guitars were built by Masaru Kohno in the Tokyo area from around 1961 to his death in 1998, and they are recognized as some of the world’s finest. After a 1948 graduation from an arts college in woodworking, Kohno developed an interest in guitars, and in 1960 apprenticed for six months with Arcangel Fernandez in Madrid, Spain. Spanish guitar builders had a very well established pattern of training apprentices who went off to found their own shops. Ultimately, Masaru Kohno found his own apprentice – his nephew, Masaki Sakurai, who now carries on the Kohno line as well as his own.
Here we have a Kohno No.15 Brazilian Rosewood Classical Guitar, built using a Spruce top paired with Brazilian Rosewood for the back, sides, headplate and bridge. The neck is Spanish Cedar, reinforced with ebony strips, and has an ebony fingerboard. The basic construction follows the traditional Spanish method, inserting the sides into slots in the heel. Proportions are for a concert grade instrument, 650mm scale length and 52mm nut width. Typically, it has no serial number but is dated to 1974.
This excellent guitar is in overall good condition, with a small amount of play wear and fingernail marking acquired over the last 40 years of use. Fret wear is light. There is a repaired crack in the top, following the center seam, between the bridge and tailblock.
Action is fairly standard at 8/64ths treble to 9/64ths bass side. This guitar has a full, rich tone and speaks with an authoritative voice.
A black hard shell case is included.
