Brand: Farrell Classical Guitars
Instrument Categories: Classical and Flamenco, Guitars, SOLD
This Jerry Farrell Classical guitar, No.57, starts with the Hauser style and a traditional Spanish construction pattern, with a Red Cedar top and Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, and bridge. The neck is Cedrilla or Spanish Cedar as used on many Spanish built classical and flamenco guitars, and the slightly crowned fingerboard is Ebony. The finish is French Polish and the top has been refinished in gloss with a light layer of lacquer, following the repair and cleating of a small top crack.
The Hauser style tends to deliver a focused, balanced tone with good separation between notes regardless of volume, making it ideal for guitarists of all levels, particularly those with well-developed skills; Andres Segovia used a 1937 Hauser for many years. The style centers around a body shape and bracing pattern and dimensioning. This Jerry Farrell Classical also features a 12-hole tie block, which improves downbearing on the saddle and hence sustain and separation. As a definite design modernization, it uses a raised fingerboard with a 20th fret extension, allowing better access to the upper registers. The fretwire is quite large for a classical guitar, which also contributes to sustain, separation and clarity. The fitted tuners are by Rodgers, with engraved gold coloured plates and pearloid buttons. Overall this guitar is in good condition, with a few small marks from string ends, just behind the tie block.
Jerry Farrell builds in Hamilton, Ontario and started by building about 20 violins while working a day job as a medical illustrator. In 1972 he was captivated by an Andres Segovia concert, and decided to build guitars using Irving Sloan’s influential 1966 book (published by EP Dutton), “Classic Guitar Construction”. Many people used this book, and later Arthur Overholtzer’s 1974 “Classical Guitar Making”. Over the years he has built many very good quality instruments, mostly to order.
