The Ibanez SS300 DVS (the DVS refers to the finish, Dark Vintage Sunburst) is a single cutaway, fully hollow archtop electric guitar. The body is a comfortable 16 inches wide at the lower bout, and is made from laminated maple (an ideal choice for feedback rejection) with two lengthways braces providing support to the top. The neck is maple with an ebony fingerboard, and binding is maple all round. The position markers are split Mother of Pearl rectangles with Abalone or Puau shell center strips.
Much like the seminal Gibson ES-175, the SS300 uses a pair of humbucking pickups with a selector switch and individual volume and tone controls, a floating bridge and a trapeze tailpiece. As it’s aimed towards jazz players, the stock bridge is ebony but the owner of this example is including a metal tune-o-matic style bridge for better intonation, should that be desired. Hardware is gold plated.
Ibanez produces a wide range of guitars, from entry level to full blown professional performance models, and the SS300 DVS archtop electric aims to the accomplished amateur jazz guitarist market. The SS300 gets good reviews on jazz guitar websites, where it’s recognised as very well made, well set up, and excellent value for price.
This example is a 2016 model, though it may have been produced during 2015 in a Samick facility. It is in very good, clean condition with just the slightest wear and plays quite well. It’s currently strung with flat-wound strings, which is what the stock strings are. The original hard-shell case is included.
