The Huss and Dalton TOM-M was our on staff expert, Mike Gray’s favourite guitar at the 2017 NAMM show. The name means that it has a Torrefied spruce top on an OM or Orchestra Model size body that has Mahogany back and sides. Torrefaction is a process of carefully heat-treating tonewoods to simulate the effects of decades of aging, and helps produce a warmer, open tone – helping a new, relatively unplayed instrument sound and respond as if it had years of being played.
From the Huss and Dalton description of the TOM-M:
“Imagine a guitar with a warm tone that still manages to clearly show you the start and stop of every note, and then you’ll get some idea of what the TOM-M sounds like. This OM features the same flat-top construction style as our TOM-R but combines mahogany with a Sitka spruce top. Rather than the immediate flash of the TOM-R, the TOM-M shines subtly with traditional mahogany guitar appointments like tortoise-style body bindings and simple dot fretboard inlays. Understatement is the name of the game here—that is, until you pick the first note.”
The OM, Orchestra Model body was introduced by Martin around 1929 to accommodate the newly designed 14 fret neck, requested by banjo players who were shifting to guitar and needed the extra space for more complex chords. It is larger than the single and double-O styles Martin had been producing, but smaller than the D-size Dreadnought bodies that were about to hit the scene. The OM is noted for evenly representing guitar frequencies and consequently is very well suited to fingerstyle playing. The TOM-M uses Mahogany for the back and sides, which adds brightness, clarity and definition compared to the warmer results of Rosewood.
As with all Huss and Dalton instruments, the fit, finish and attention to detail is unmatched. These guitars play very well, sound great, and are very responsive.
