The Hofner Violin Bass 500/1 Vintage Relic is a limited production bass built to order, reproducing the 1963 instrument built for Paul McCartney. This version seen here carries a ‘Relic’ vintage sunburst finish, and like the 500/2 Club bass we’ve also posted today, was shown at the 2019 NAMM extravaganza in Anaheim, California. While this is a production item in the Hofner catalog, it is normally available only as a special order, as the finish is unique to each instrument.
This is a new instrument, delivering the look and tone of a vintage 500/1 violin bass but with new-instrument reliability. The hollow bodies give an unmistakable ‘thump’ and strongly suggest the response of an upright bass, but with a lot more volume. The light weight and 30-inch short scale make these very comfortable to play for any length of time.
Like the originals, the Violin Bass is built using Spruce for the top, Maple for the back, sides and neck, and Indian Rosewood for the unbound fingerboard. Classic appointments include vintage style open gear tuners, Hofner pickups and ‘teacup’ style control knobs.

“Handmade in Germany – A special vintage finish Violin Bass created by our master in the violin lacquer department. Beautifully aged to look authentically vintage but with the advantage of a brand new bass. Very special and secret varnishes are used to achieve the remarkable aged finish.
The 63-RLC is inspired by the bass we made in 1963 for Paul McCartney and features an unbound 2 piece neck and 2 on a strip tuners.
Each bass is a unique instrument, no two are exactly alike as the ageing process is all done by hand.
All models are supplied with a pearloid pickguard (not mounted) and include a Höfner Vintage strap and case.
