The Hofner Violin Bass first appeared in public during 1956, and Hofner’s intent was to encourage double bass players in beat and jazz groups to shift to electric. In many ways, this intention was similar to Leo Fender’s in introducing the Precision Bass in 1951. The benefits were immediately apparent and these new electric basses started showing up on stages, especially with early rock groups.
In the early 1960’s, the bass player in a group from Liverpool started using a Hofner 500/1 violin bass. Being left handed, and left handed basses being rare, the symmetry of the instrument appealed to him as it didn’t visually suffer from being flipped over and strung left. The short scale and light weight of the bass – it’s about five pounds – lent itself well to his innovative and animated playing style, and it immediately became a hit. So did most of the songs.
Here we have a Hofner 500/1 1964 Reissue model, dating to 2011, in factory Left Handed form and built at the Hofner plant in Hagenau, Bavaria. It is in excellent original condition and is strung with flatwound strings. The original hard-shell case is included.
