Here is a Douglas Harrison 17 inch Archtop cutaway guitar, built at Harrison’s shop in Toronto, Ontario during 2000. This model is now referred to as a ‘Classic Jazz’ or CJ.
This excellent instrument is built in the traditional archtop model, pairing a hand carved, solid Spruce top with a hand carved Flame Maple back. Flame Maple is also used for the sides and neck, with Ebony for the bridge, pickguard, tailpiece cap, head plate and bound fingerboard.
It also carries a fingerboard-mount Bartolini pickup, with the volume and tone controls on the pickguard and the output jack installed through the tail block. Tuners are by Schaller, with ebony buttons.
This Harrison 17 Inch Archtop cutaway is in good condition, with little wear. It has just been set up at The Twelfth Fret Repair Shop by Douglas Harrison, and plays very well. It is resonant and responsive, with a full tone. 17 inches body width does make for a fairly large guitar, but this is quite comfortable to hold and play.
The original hard shell arched top case is included.
Douglas Harrison’s work focuses on archtop guitars, in the traditional form as seen here and the successful GB model, developed in co-ordination with – and for! – the late Gary Benson, one of Canada’s premiere jazz musicians who also taught at York University.
