The Guild X170, also called the ‘Mini Manhattan’ was built from 1985 until 2002 as a fully hollow electric archtop with laminated Maple body, Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard.
Guild rose from the ashes of Epiphone in 1952, with guitarist and retailer Alfred Dronge and George Mann, former Epiphone executive, at the helm. Their first shop was in Manhattan and their skilled staff were ex-Epiphone workers. Those workers had been striking and Epiphone responded by firing most and moving the plant out of state (from New York to Pennsylvania). From the start, Guild was known for high quality archtop and flat top guitars and high demand quickly forced relocation to Hoboken, New Jersey.
Here we’re looking at a Guild X170 dating to late 1988 and built in Westerly, Rhode Island. It’s in very good clean condition with very little wear of any kind. The clear, natural finish is in great shape and nicely shows off the light figuring of the Maple top, back and sides. The neck uses a five-piece construction with three Maple sections separated by two thin Walnut layers. The bridge base and top, and the bound fingerboard are both Indian Rosewood. All the hardware is gold plated, including Grover Roto-Matics, the traditional Harp tailpiece, and the humbucking pickup covers. Fret wear is minor, and this guitar plays quite well and cleanly.
This Guild X170 is sold with its original hard shell case.
