The Gretsch White Penguin 58 Reissue, officially model G6134, re-creates the 1958 Bigsby-equipped version of the Jet-based Penguin. The White Penguin was created in response to the Gretsch White Falcon, itself created as a showpiece for the 1954 NAMM show and not intended for production. However, it drew so much attention – and actual orders – that it did wind up as a production model. Its decoration, with gold hardware and gold sparkle binding and covers, is neither subtle or understated!
Gretsch introduced the Jet body designs in 1953, prompted by the 1952 appearance of Gibson’s new Les Paul model. Despite any visual similarities to the LP, the Jet is very different, using a heavily chambered back with an arched Laminate Maple cap. Gretsch models also draw heavily from their arch-top heritage, with a fairly high neck set to allow for a ‘floating’ bridge on a wooden base.
This Gretsch White Penguin 58 Reissue model was built during December 2016 by Terada at Nagoya, Japan. It is in overall very good, clean condition with only light wear. The body back is Mahogany, with an arched Laminate Maple cap. The neck is Mahogany, with a bound Ebony fingerboard and ‘Neo-Classic’ position markers. As a 58 Reissue, it uses a pair of Filter ‘Tron pickups, which Gretsch introduced during 1957, rather than single-coil deArmond DynaSonics. The tuners are gold Grover Imperial models with ‘Deco’ buttons. A single-roller Bigsby is stock, and works well with the Space Control bridge. Fret wear is very light.
The original Gretsch-branded hard shell case is included.
