Guitar makers and players sometimes don’t want to go for an understated approach, and the Gretsch Sparkle Jet G6129T is a case in point. Featuring a wildly metallic sparkle layer on top of chambered, single cut Mahogany body with Maple laminate top, the Sparkle Jet is anything but subtle.
The Gretsch Jet models were introduced in 1955 as a response to the Gibson Les Paul. At the time, Gretsch was resistant to solidbody designs and so the Jet is heavily chambered. The Mahogany back has spaces routed into it, and a Maple laminate top is applied. These tend to be lighter and more resonant than solidbody designs. On this Jet, the neck is Mahogany with a bound, 22-fret Ebony fingerboard with a 24.6 inch scale length and ‘thumbnail’ Neo-Classic position markers. Naturally a Bigsby B3C Gretsch-branded, V-cut vibrato tailpiece is installed!
The Gretsch Sparkle Jet, or Silver Jet G6129 models are built by Terada at Nagoya, Japan along with most of the other Pro-Line models. Quality is very high and easily compare favorably with vintage models. This example was built during October of 2007 and is in overall good condition. Play wear is light, but there’s a bit of natural tarnish to the nickel plating on the pickup covers. The pickups are Classic models by TV Jones, and the tuners are traditional open gear Grover Sta-Tites; the bridge is a ‘Space Control’ design on an Ebony base. It plays very well, and is currently strung with a 12-52 flatwound set, which are surprisingly easy to play.
The original Gretsch-branded hard shell Jet case by TKL is included.
