The Gretsch G5125 Electromatic was part of a line of similar models differentiated by colour; the 5125 in black, the 5129 with a red top, the 5127 in powder blue. Based on the Gretsch Anniversary models, all shared the same hardware – a licensed Bigsby tailpiece with aluminum bridge, Kluson style tuners, and deArmond 2000 pickups that simulated the classic single coil DynaSonics.
Produced from 2003 to 2008, these models were built in Korea by both Peerless and Samick. They were immediately popular with players seeking an inexpensive introduction to the Gretsch world, and were often modified with better electronic components. They are built using Maple Laminate for the 16 inch wide body, with Maple for the neck, and Rosewood for the bound fingerboard.
Here we’re looking at a Gretsch G5125, in black dress and dating to December of 2005 at the Samick plant in Incheon, Korea. It is in good condition with some minor play wear, and has had a few significant upgrades. First, the original Bigsby-supplied aluminum bridge was replaced with a Gretsch Adjusto-Matic bridge mounted on a Rosewood base. This provides better tone and intonation. The Bigsby arm has had one slight modification for comfort. On many stock Bigsby arms, the lower edge is somewhat sharp. That edge can be quickly filed or ground and polished to provide a much more comfortable feel.
As the major upgrade, the deArmond 2000 pickups and wiring harness were replaced with a set of TV Jones TV Classic pickups in the deArmond mount. The original parts are in the case.
This Gretsch G5125 is a great sounding guitar, and it plays well and cleanly. It’s a bit lighter than a Japanese or US made Pro-line Gretsch model, but I find the neck a bit more comfortable. In any case, it’s great for many genres.
A very good and perfectly fitted TKL arched top, hard shell case with wrapped handle and strap fittings is included.
