The Gretsch Country Club appeared in 1954 as one of Gretsch’s early electric guitars and targeted at the higher end jazz player needing a full size, 17 inch body and solid Spruce top. This model was in production until Gretsch folded in 1981, reappeared between 1995 and 1999 as a US built reissue, and again since 2001 as a pro-line model, Made in Japan by Terada.
Modern Country Club production no longer has the solid Spruce top – like other pro-line hollow body Gretsch models, the body is now built of laminate Maple. The neck is solid Maple with a bound Rosewood fingerboard. Country Clubs used tone bar – sound post bracing.
Here we’re looking at a Gretsch Country Club dating to December of 2010 and built at the Japan Terada plant in Nagoya. It features a very cool 1950’s style layout with a two tone, Smoke Gray and Metallic Violet opaque finish and ‘cloud’ inlays. The hardware is Gold plated and includes Grover Imperial tuners with metal art deco “stairstep’ buttons, Gretsch branded Bigsby B6 vibrato tailpiece, a Melita adjustable bridge with Ebony feet, and a pair of Dyna Sonic single coil pickups, built by Seymour Duncan for Gretsch. The control layout goes with the single coil setup – a pickup selector, master volume, individual volumes, and a master tone control. The original pick guard – matching the finish – is not installed, but is in the case with its brackets.
This Gretsch Country Club guitar is in very nice condition with very little wear. It plays very nicely – Gretsch models are often really slinky. The DynaSonics really sound good, and the two tone finish is very distinctive!
The original Gretsch hard shell case is included.
