Originally built between 1958 and 1972, the Gretsch Anniversary 6124 was the Sunburst version of the two-tone 6125 model, both based on the successful 6120 Chet Atkins model. In its first two years, the Anniversary 6124/6125 carried a single Filter ‘Tron humbucking pickup at the neck, but from 1961 a single coil Hi-Lo ‘Tron was used.
The basic structure or bones of the Gretsch Anniversary 6124 is very similar to the 6120, with a fully hollow, 16 inch wide body using parallel tone bar bracing and no sound post. The body is single-bound, but the F-holes, fingerboard and head are not. The neck is Maple with a Rosewood fingerboard – Brazilian Rosewood, as common at the time – and Mother of Pearl ‘Neo-Classic’ or ‘thumbnail’ position markers. Hardware is very simple – open gear Van Gent tuners at the head, a G-cutout non-vibrato tailpiece, Space Control bridge with Ebony base, a single HiLo ‘Tron pickup with a volume control and a tone switch.
This model was sold as an entry level guitar, offering all the basic tone and playability of the classic Chet Atkins 6120, but at a more affordable price.
This Gretsch Anniversary 6124 is in overall good condition and plays well. First – it has none of the regrettable ‘Binding Rot’ common to so many Gretsch models of the era, caused by an interaction of the binding and the glues used to attach it. The finish is in very nice condition with only light scuffing and denting. There is some wear to the finish on the neck. On the back of the head, there’s a section of a dealer’s decal reading “Richie’s Music Center Atwells Ave Provid”, which was possibly in Providence, Rhode Island.
Fret wear is light to moderate, and the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard has light wear. The volume knob is not original, and one strap button has been replaced.
The original Gretsch two-tone case is included.
