The Gibson Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo is based on the original 1942 version of the SJ, introduced as an upmarket version of the J-45 slope shouldered dreadnought.
The Gibson Southern Jumbo or SJ is based very closely on the classic J-45, but with more decoration. It was launched with the J-45 in 1942, but marketed, as the name suggests, to musicians in the American South – south of the Mason-Dixon line. The key differences are in fingerboard binding and position markers.
Keeping in mind 1942 specifications, the Gibson Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo is built with Adirondack Red Spruce for the top, Mahogany for the sides, back, neck plus neck and tail blocks, and Rosewood for the bound fingerboard and rectangular, saddle-through bridge. Unlike the wartime models, the neck profile is modern, and there is actually a truss rod! The rod was not always used during the war, depending on the availability of steel for civilian purposes. At the head, Waverly open gear tuners are installed, and these are also made in Bozeman.
Gibson launched the Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo Model as a 2013 model to celebrate these classic guitars. Ms Crow has long played the SJ, in the form of its renamed descendant, the Country-Western model. While these officially launched for the 2013 model year, they started appearing in late May 2012.
This example dates to October 21 2012, and was built in Bozeman, Montana. It’s in great condition with only minor wear.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
More From The Builder On The Gibson Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo:
“Created with Sheryl Crow, the features of this SJ are designed to deliver the warm voice of our classic Southern Jumbo with the additional projection and increased firepower of its predecessor, the Advanced Jumbo.
Finished in a gorgeous, hand-sprayed custom Sunset Burst, this guitar is a standout. The SJ, as it first appeared in 1942, has a seductive story. The original was born as a tribute to the great music and musicians heralding from south of the Mason-Dixon line. That guitar was built to evoke the warmth, tradition, romance and culture of the Southern states. As a modern darlin’ of the South, the Sheryl Crow Southern Jumbo, is built to be the most expressive, dynamic Southern Jumbo ever released.
The guitar, handcrafted by Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman, Montana, is built with an Adirondack red spruce top and mahogany back and sides, enhanced with an advanced bracing pattern for optimal acoustic resonance. Together these woods and construction techniques provide a blend of depth, richness and warmth with an unrivaled power and projection.
Finished in a custom hand-sprayed Montana Sunset Burst, the top is edged in a multi-ply binding and a traditional double-ring soundhole rosette. Mother-of-pearl split-parallelogram inlays are handset in the fingerboard and the traditional gold script Gibson logo and pre-war banner decal are a tip of the hat to the originals. The SCSJ is set up with a custom, polished tortoise pick guard, Tusq end pin and open-backed Waverly™ nickel tuners with pearl buttons for excellent performance and a classic look.”
