The Gibson SGJ 120th Anniversary model seen here in a satin “Chocolate” finish was built for the 2014 model year, and the name SGJ possibly represents a revival of the ‘SG Junior’ concept.
Differing somewhat from earlier models in terms of wood selections, the Gibson SGJ uses a 3-piece Mahogany body paired with a Maple neck and Indian Rosewood fingerboard. The pickups are ’61 Zebra’ Alnico V models without covers, running through Gibson’s typical wiring setup of a 3-way switch and individual volume and tone controls. Tuners are Gibson Deluxe models, and a satin-finished Tune-O-Matic and stop tailpiece are at the other end. Position markers are dots, with a mother of pearl banner with ‘120th Anniversary’ engraving at the octave fret. Headstock inlays appear to be lightly-stained Maple.
This example is in overall good condition with only minor wear; the finish is very light and in good shape, and fret wear is minimal.
More From The builder on the initial 2013 version of the Gibson SGJ:
“As part of the 2013 Year of Les Paul celebrations, Gibson USA brings you a new SG model that’s available at an entry-level price to suit any budget. When it took over briefly from the Les Paul Standard in 1961, the SG was very much a part of Les Paul’s vision, and the SG remained an iconic Gibson electric even after the single-cutaway Les Paul Standard returned later in the decade.
The SGJ offers all the ingredients that made the most desirable Les Paul Standards legendary—classic tonewoods, innovative hardware, two genuine humbucking pickups, and of course Gibson’s acclaimed build quality and playability—all wrapped up in a stripped-down, no-nonsense package that makes this guitar a flat-out performer. Simpler esthetics and a cool worn-look finish technique add up to big savings for the player, and the SGJ still looks great in your choice of Cherry, Chocolate, Hand-Rubbed Vintage Burst, or Hand-Rubbed Transparent White, all in grain-textured nitrocellulose lacquer. ”
