The Gibson SG Standard is the successor to the Les Paul Standard, by way of Gibson’s 1961 complete redesign of the Les Paul models, and the loss of the Les Paul name that followed.
We have a pair of SG models, visually similar but with subtle differences, and we’ve just seen an SG Special from 2002. This Gibson SG Standard in the traditional Heritage Red, the same finish as the Special, also built at the Gibson Nashville plant but dating to September 12th, 1996.
Comparing these two models, the key differences are that the Standard pickups with metal covers while the Special’s are bare and the Standard has a bound fingerboard with trapezoidal inlays where the Special’s is unbound with dot markers. Finally, the Standard headstock has Mother of Pearl used for the ‘Gibson’ and ‘Holly’ logos rather than a gold foil decal.
Both of these examples have the large ‘Batwing’ pickguard, and a combination of ABR bridge and stop tailpiece. Both have Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic ‘Keystone’ buttons.
This Gibson SG Standard is in good working order, with minor wear. There are a few small dents here and there, which have not broken the finish. Fret wear is light and the guitar plays well and is a comfortable weight – interestingly both examples weigh the same, 3.25kg or 7.15 pounds.
The original brown and pink Gibson hard shell case is included.
