Not long after the Les Paul appeared, ‘Special’ models followed. With the 1961 revamp and rename of the Les Paul line in 1961, the Gibson SG Special came on stage. Using the same basic construction as the Standard or Custom models, the SG Special lowered price points by minimizing decoration.
Differences between the Gibson SG Special and SG Standard don’t jump out at first. The main visual elements are the same – the same wood selection, shape, and gloss lacquer finish. However, the Special has an unbound fingerboard with dot markers, gold-decal Gibson logo and ‘SG’ engraved or screen printed on the truss rod cover. The SG Standard has a bound fingerboard, trapezoidal markers, Mother of Pearl Gibson logo plus the ‘Holly’ inlay on the headstock. As well, the pickups are uncovered on the Special, while the Standard pickups have metal covers.
There is another variant, the Gibson SG Special Faded, which has a lighter finish in ‘Worn Brown’ or ‘Worn Cherry’.
This Gibson SG Special was built at the Gibson Nashville plant, dates to July 29, 2005 and seems to have had covers added to the original uncovered pickups. It’s in very nice shape, with light wear to the finish and pickguard – it has been played but looked after. Fret wear is very light, and it plays well. The Gibson Deluxe tuners are lighter than the Grover RotoMatics sometimes used on Standards, which helps with balance, and they work very smoothly. This guitar looks, feels and sounds like rather like an SG Standard with the full size, ‘Batwing’ pickguard.
The original hard shell case is included.
