The Gibson SG Junior was built from 1963 to 1971, again from 1991 to 1994, and is back in the catalog. This model is the descendant of the 1954 Les Paul Junior.
Designed to be an entry level yet high quality instrument, the Junior line featured a full scale length, Mahogany slab body, Mahogany neck, unbound Rosewood fingerboard, a single ‘dogear’ P-90 pickup with volume and tone controls. Kluson Deluxe strip tuners were installed, with a stop-bar style wraparound bridge at the body end.
Here we’re looking at a Gibson SG Junior in the traditional Gibson Cherry stain, gloss finish, built during 1964 on Parsons Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is in overall good playing condition, and has a definite ‘relic’ feel to it. There’s lots of wear, but it has not been abused. Unfortunately the plastics used for the pickguards can degrade a bit over time. In this case, the guard has buckled somewhat and been trimmed where a screw broke through the edge. The original Kluson Deluxe strip tuners have been replaced with Grover Roto-Matics, and the control knobs are not original but are period and Gibson. Fret and fingerboard wear are moderate, particularly in the low positions.
These can be really hot guitars. There’s little to get in the way of the player, it’s light and comfortable, and definitely looks cool.
A non-original rectangular hard shell (bass) case is included.
Here is what the builder has to say about the Gibson SG Junior:
“SG Junior – An Essential Favorite
The SG Junior returns to the classic design that made it relevant, played and loved — shaping sound across generations and genres of music.
Initially introduced in the early 60’s as a student model, the SG Junior has been embraced by musicians for almost 60 years.
The rich, Vintage Cherry lacquer finish, early 60’s neck joint and sharp vintage body scarfing are hallmarks of this model. It’s equipped with the powerful single dogear P-90 pickup with handwired controls and an orange drop capacitor.
The Vintage Deluxe style tuners with white buttons and compensated wraparound bridge also contribute to simplicity, function and rock-solid tone. “
