The Gibson SG ‘Batwing’ Standard started appearing in 1966, displacing the smaller, treble-side pickguard, offering much more protection to the top of the guitar during enthusiastic use. The SG itself was originally introduced as the 1961 Les Paul, but without Les Paul’s input and at the end of his endorsement contract. For various reasons, the Les Paul name was dropped for 1963 production and has been the SG or ‘Solid Guitar’ since.
This Gibson SG ‘Batwing’ Standard has a serial number dating to May 10, 2010 and was built at the Gibson Nashville plant. It’s in good clean condition with only very light wear. It plays very well, and its light weight makes it very comfortable. Being a few years old, this example uses the Kluson or Gibson Deluxe style tuners. These are physically a bit lighter than the Grover Roto-Matics used on some versions, and that weight reduction at the end of the neck helps balance the guitar.
Sold with its original Gibson branded, black hard shell case.
Here’s the builder on the Gibson SG ‘Batwing’ Standard:
“The Gibson SG ‘Batwing’ Standard rocks the classic looks and features associated with the late 60’s style SG models sought after by many. A rounded profile mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, long tenon 19th fret neck joint, and a solid mahogany body provide the backbone for singing sustain. The 490R and 490T Alnico II pickups provide the power to drive. A black, 5-ply, full-face pickguard set this SG Standard apart from others… a truly versatile classic. “
