The Gibson Midtown appeared in late 2011 and was ultimately available in three versions – the Standard, Custom, and Standard P-90. It’s a chambered, F-Hole double cutaway design, but with a flat top and back. It also has a slightly tapered headstock, unusual for Gibson models.
Here we’re looking at an early production Gibson Midtown Standard in Cherry Red finish. Its serial number dates it to October 28th, 2011 and construction at the Gibson shop in Nashville, Tennessee. It features a chambered Mahogany body capped with a flat Maple top, and Mahogany neck with bound Rosewood fingerboard. The Gibson logo and position marker dots are Mother of Pearl. For hardware, there are Grover Roto-Matic tuners with keystone buttons, a pair of humbuckers with white trim rings, Tone Pros roller tune-o-matic tailpiece (this part is not original) and a stock, ‘licensed’ Bigsby B7 style tailpiece. Later versions of the Midtown use a stop tailpiece. The ‘Licensed’ version of the Bigsby is made under license offshore to metric dimensions, and at significantly lower cost than the US-made Bigsby units.
This example is in great condition all round, and plays well. The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
