This Cherry Red Gibson Memphis ES-335 dates to February 7, 2015 and was built at the now-closed Memphis plant. While that plant is closed, the ES-335 is still in production, but the ‘standard’ ES-335 comes with dot position markers; the block markers seen here are now found on the “Figured – Sixties Cherry” version. This example has a relatively plain top and back, but does not have the ‘P’ – for plain – designation in the model number.
Introduce in early 1958, the ground-breaking ES-335, 345 and 355 models combined the feedback resistance of solidbodies with the tonal shaping of a hollowbody, making them perfectly suited to larger, higher volume stages and venues.
This Gibson Memphis ES-335 is in great condition with only very light wear. Its neck profile is slightly narrower than modern ES-335’s by a couple of millimeters, but is not as narrow as some 60’s models. It is very comfortable and plays well and cleanly.
Two small changes have been made from its original configuration: the original ABR bridge has been replaced with a locking TonePros NVR2 ‘wireless’ model. The ‘wireless’ has nothing to do with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi – it’s that this model does not rely on the original-style saddle retaining wire, which tends to be a source of rattling. Also, the tailpiece studs have been replaced with domed-top locking models that keep the tailpiece from falling off during string changes. Otherwise, this guitar appears to be in original condition.
The original Gibson branded brown ‘Made in Canada’ case is included, and it’s in as good condition as the guitar.
