This is a very rare Gibson ‘Lucy’ LPR-7, reproducing George Harrison’s Les Paul and one of a very few built during 2007. Apparently five prototypes were built, then a run of perhaps 25 guitars, including this one, which were mostly aimed at the Japanese market. The project was then put on hold until 2013, when a larger run of 100 reissues were made.
This Gibson ‘Lucy’ example is in exceptionally good, clean and original VOS style condition with vanishingly light wear. There may be some finger brush marks on the finish below the treble strings, or that may be part of the VOS treatment. The pickguard is not mounted, but is included in the case along with the original case candy, strap, and Certificate of Authenticity.
‘Lucy’ started out as an ‘ordinary’ Gold Top 1957 Les Paul with Gibson’s brand-new Humbucking pickups. It was later owned by John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful, who traded it to Rick Derringer. The guitar’s finish was quite worn, and as Derringer lived near Kalamazoo, he asked Gibson to refinish it in red. Unsatisfied with the colour, he sold it to Dan Armstrong’s shop, where it was purchased by Eric Clapton, who then gifted it to George Harrison. This guitar played a key role during the recording of The Beatle’s project at that moment, the White Album.
