This Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite from 1992! Built between 1987 and 1998 at the Gibson Nashville plant, the Les Paul Studio Lite features classic Les Paul construction, but without binding, and with an ebony fingerboard.
As its name implies, the Les Paul Studio Lite is weight relieved though it is not chambered, and this example, dating to September 10th, 1992 sits on the scale at a svelte 7.8 pounds. It also has a 1960’s slim taper neck, quite a bit smaller than modern profiles. Hardware is gold plated, with coverless Gibson 490R and 490T pickups.
Weight relief is often done by ‘chambering’. On a Les Paul, before the Maple cap is fitted, the Mahogany body is sometimes routed to create nine hollow cavities. However, on the Les Paul Studio Lite, fewer cavities are routed and they are filled with light weight wood Gibson named ‘Chromyte’ – a species of Balsa. This maintains the solid, sweet tone of the guitar and its physical balance while reducing weight.
This guitar is in overall good and original condition, with the original case. The gold plating is lightly worn in the usual locations, where the hand wrests. The nitrocellulose lacquer Cherry Sunburst finish is in decent shape, with a few small dents and scratches, primarily on the back, with a small finish chip on the back edge near the tail strap pin. It plays well and the light weight makes it very comfortable and snappy.
