Between 2011 and 2013, Gibson built a number of Les Paul Studio Joe Bonamassa Signature models, featuring late 1950’s dimensions, a Gold Top finish, and BurstBucker pickups. As a Studio model, it keeps the core Les Paul design features, but doesn’t have some of the trim – specifically body and neck binding.
The Gibson Les Paul Studio Joe Bonamassa Signature starts with the Maple capped Mahogany body and Mahogany set neck that has defined the Les Paul since 1952. The neck profile is a rounded D, 1959-style shape.
The Studio models lack the body and fingerboard binding to lower production costs, and here, Granadillo (a Mexican sourced Rosewood variant) is used for the fingerboard instead of Indian Rosewood. This moves the model off the list of guitars with CITES-regulated woods, so it can be exported and imported freely without accompanying documentation and permits. For hardware, this model is pretty traditional, with Grover Roto-Matic tuners at the head, a tune-o-matic bridge with stop tailpiece, and a pair of BurstBucker pickups – a BurstBucker 3 at the bridge and BurstBucker 2 at the neck position. The wiring is standard, with one quirk of different knobs for each pickup! The truss rod cover is engraved with Joe Bonamassa ‘s signature.
This guitar is in very good condition, with light wear to the pickguard. It plays very well, and the higher, relatively narrow frets give lots of traction. The traditional metallic Gold Top finish coupled with a dark tint lacquer for the back, sides and neck is very attractive.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
Joe Bonamassa has been playing guitar for much of his life, and has been on stages with many top performers. Aside from his formidable skills as a player, he’s also well known as a collector and proponent of using vintage instruments in performance.
