This is one of our staff’s favourite Studios a Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe II from September 2013, with lightly flamed top and a honeyburst finish!
First appearing in 1983, the Gibson Les Paul Studio has been built in a range of variations though all aim to deliver a real Les Paul experience but at a lower price point. The price savings mostly come from two labour intensive areas. First, most Studios have thinner finishes and not all are gloss. This reduces the time spent in the finish room which can take weeks for a full gloss. As well, there is no binding applied to the body or neck. The next factor in cost savings is the visual grade of the woods. It’s been Gibson’s practice for many decades to use lower visual grade woods when the instrument gets a solid colour finish. These lower visual grades are sonically the same as any other ‘higher’ grade.
In 2013, Gibson issued the Les Paul Studio Deluxe, sometimes known as the Deluxe II or Studio II. It moves up from the Studio concept, with a gloss Nitrocellulose lacquer Honeyburst finish over top of a moderately flamed, carved top. As a studio, it does not have binding but does have another new feature – an active electronics package.
On this guitar, the volume controls are push/pull and offer a split coil, but in a way that maintains some hum resistance. There is also a 10dB boots circuit with true bypass to help the player stand out when soloing. This circuitry is powered by a standard 9v battery and Gibson thoughtfully added a battery compartment with easy-open door to the control cover plate.
This Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe example dates to September 16 2013 at the Gibson Nashville plant, and is in great condition. It plays well, and is reasonably light at just over 8 pounds. The finish looks very good, and there is very little wear of any kind.
The original hard shell case is included.
