The Gibson Les Paul Standard as a distinct model appeared in 1958, based on the 1957 Les Paul Gold Top that carried the new Humbucking pickups but with a sunburst finish and a figured top. However, the Les Paul was declining in popularity, and the model was completely redesigned as what we now know as the SG, for 1961. The traditional single-cutaway Les Paul was out of production until 1968.
Now, the Les Paul Standard is one of Gibson’s mainstays, along with the ES-335 type guitars that had also been introduced in 1958. The construction is basically the same as always – a Mahogany body with a carved Maple top, Figured Maple if the guitar does not get an opaque finish, and a Mahogany neck with a bound Rosewood fingerboard.
Here we’re looking at a lovely Gibson Les Paul Standard, dating to August 28, 2007 and built at the Gibson Nashville plant before the 2010 floods. This example has a nicely figured to and the nitrocellulose lacquer tobacco sunburst finish shows off the curves well. This guitar is weight relieved, bringing it down to a very comfortable 7.44 pounds (3.38kg).
This guitar appears to be in original condition. The open pickups are original, and the hardware and frets show light wear. The majority of the finish wear is pick marks in the area that the pick guard, no longer installed at the factory, would be. The feeling seems to be that the pick guard blocks the view of the top figure, so Gibson includes the pickguard with the guitar, but does not drill the two holes for it – one in the top by the fingerboard tag and the other in the binding at the waist. Unfortunately here, the pickguard is not included but these are available separately should one be desired.
The original Gibson hard shell case by TKL is included.
