The Gibson Les Paul Standard Cherryburst, named as the Standard, didn’t appear until 1959 but in its sunburst form dates to 1958 and the move away from the Goldtop finish. The ‘Standard’ engraved truss rod cover came into use during 1976,
At first appearance in 1952, the Les Paul model bore the familiar gold-top, and in 1954 the Les Paul Custom appeared in black, along with the Les Paul Junior. In 1955 the Les Paul Special was launched, without the carved Maple cap. Finishes included the ‘TV’ tint, intended to make the guitar better visible on black and white televisions.
In late 1957, Gibson started installing their new Humbucking pickups, but sales were dropping and in an effort to revive them, the Goldtop finish was replaced for the 1958 model year with a traditional sunburst. This effect was created using cherry red tints based on aniline dyes added to clear lacquer. Over time, the dyes have reacted to light and other environmental factors and faded, but not necessarily to lighter reds. Some are now yellowish or brown, the colour of iced tea.
By 1960, it was clear that changing the finish hadn’t worked to spark sales, and a complete redesign took place. The 1961 Les Paul line used what we now know as the SG body. The original Les Paul design was discontinued and didn’t come back until 1968.
Here we’re looking at a Gibson Les Paul Standard Cherryburst dating to April 1st, 1998 and built at the Gibson Nashville plant. It is in overall good condition with some light wear on the back in the form of light scratches. It has little wear, including negligible fret wear, and plays well. The pickup covers have been removed, and the original pickguard is still in place. (For current production, the pickguard is not mounted, though it’s included).
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
