During 2003, Gibson produced a set of 25 Les Paul R9 models based on the 1959 Les Paul model owned by Dave Carpenter of the Music Machine guitar shop. These were named ‘Real Feel’ models and here, we’re looking at number 16 of the 25.
What makes these Gibson Les Paul R9 ‘Real Feel’ models unique is the V-shaped neck profile of Carpenter’s original Burst and Brazilian Rosewood fingerboards. At the time, the use of Brazilian was entirely ordinary. For this particular limited edition set of guitars, the fingerboards were chosen before Gibson stopped using Brazilian during 2003.
This Gibson Les Paul R9 ‘Real Feel’- very rare instrument – is in very good condition, with light wear. As these replicate the original, relatively thin nitrocellulose lacquer finishes, there is an amount of natural, expected finish sinking into the pores of the Mahogany back and neck, and light belt buckle or jean-rivet marking in an expected area on the back. The Eastern Maple top is nicely but not heavily figured and does not have a dramatically deep carve. Its cherry sunburst finish is in very good condition. The hardware is meant to replicate the 1959 spec, with Kluson keystone tuners, nickel plated ABR bridge and stop tailpiece, and Gibson BurstBucker pickups with nickel plated covers.
This guitar plays very well, and its relatively light weight and soft-V neck profile make it very comfortable for extended use.
The original hard shell case is included.
