The Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker appeared in 2014 as a 120th Anniversary model – a US made, reasonably priced high quality carved-top guitar with a solid history behind the names.
The Melody Maker appeared in 1959 and built until 1971 as an entry level, thin slab Mahogany bodied single cutaway model, with one or two single coil pickups and a narrow headstock. The neck was Mahogany with a Rosewood fingerboard. For 1961, a second cutaway was added, but it wasn’t until 1967 that the Melody Maker got the ‘SG’ body shape. These were very common and popular guitars – my own first decent electric was a double-cutaway, single pickup model. Pat Travers and Joan Jett used Melody Makers on hit records and toured to support them.
For 2014, the Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker drew from both Les Paul and Melody Maker roots. It has a slimmer, single cutaway Mahogany body with a carved Maple top, Maple neck and Indian Rosewood fingerboard. For electronics, there are a pair of P90S pickups – one Rhythm, one Treble – a pickup selector and individual volume and tone controls. Tuners are Kluson Deluxe types with creme plastic buttons, and the bridge is a ridged stop-bar model, which Gibson calls the “Lightning Bar”.
This example is in overall good condition with some play wear to the body, in the form of some small pressure marks and a couple of small lacquer chips around the edges. Fret wear is very light, and this is a really fun, great sounding guitar. The P-90s deliver a full, thick sound making this a fantastic rock or slide guitar, made in the USA and with the Gibson name.
This Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker is sold with its original Gibson branded gig bag.
